I'm currently researching how to open a bank account in the US and have come across a lot of conflicting information. Some people say it's easy: just bring your passport, visa, and proof of address, and you'll get an account on the same day. Others claim that even with a full set of documents, the bank can refuse without explanation. It appears that this is not uncommon. To be honest, it sounds strange: why refuse if everything is in order? Maybe it's because of checks or the bank's internal policy? I would like to hear from those who have actually gone through this process - how difficult is it, and does it make sense to try several banks at once?

I recently dealt with this issue and want to say that the process can indeed be complicated, especially if you are a non-resident. It is important to understand that even with a complete set of documents, you will not always get a definite yes. There is an excellent post on the topic of american bank open account on this page. It outlines all the steps, what documents to prepare, and why banks sometimes refuse without explanation. I also recommend reading the comments under the posts, as people often write about their personal experiences there, so if you get stuck at any stage, you can really get some useful advice.
